With a constantly evolving economy, the needs of employers are always changing as well. In this environment, companies throughout Georgia are often unable to find worthy candidates who can fill their open jobs. Small businesses in particular face challenges when they try to staff positions requiring a specific type of training or experience. Now, a new state law is now aimed at developing a strong pool of job applicants in high-demand industries.

Under HB 982, the state’s Workforce Development Board will now publish a high-demand career list annually. By identifying key industries that pay above-average entry-level wages and present solid career opportunities, Georgia is looking to equip its residents with the skills necessary to make a strong living in a thriving industrial sector.

The High-Demand Career Initiatives Program (HDCI) will play a significant role in implementing the new law. HDCI’s purpose is to ensure that the list is effectively utilized to inform and guide workforce training and education. High schools, colleges, and adult education programs will be given the list, among others. This should help small businesses and other employers generate a pipeline of promising candidates while making it easier for students, job seekers and career changers to access the resources they need to maximize their earning potential.

Within the high-demand career list, many industries that are essential to Georgia’s economic development can be found, such as:

  • Aerospace
  • Agribusiness
  • Construction
  • Education
  • Hospitality and tourism
  • Logistics
  • Manufacturing

Of course, identifying high-quality prospects is just one challenge that Georgia employers face. Small businesses usually lack the funds to staff a full human resources department, so finding an attorney who can advise on complex employment law issues is invaluable. Personalized legal insight can help your company remain in compliance with the law and address issues relating to wage rules, discrimination claims, sexual harassment allegations and other critical matters.
